Council approves of
street crossings
The Municipal Council this week unanim
ously adopted recommendations by the N.S.W.
Police Traffic Branch for pedestrian crossings
in the town.
The Council had asked that
crossings be put down and
the matter was investigated
by Traffic Branch officers.
The officers reported that
crossings were necessary at
the following locations:—
William-street at the inter
section of John-street; Castle.
reagh-street at the intersec
tion of John-st.; John-st. at
the intersection of Castle
reagh-st., Hunter-st. opposite
the Public School; York-st.
opposite the High School
(two crossings); George-st.
at the intersection of Market
Street.
In its letter to Council the
Traffic Branch said that be
fore facilities would be made
available they would have to
be authorised by the Com
missioner of Police.
"It has been found that
it is unwise to locate cros
sings for the use of school
children in a thoroughfare
which carries intermittent
but fast moving traffic or
where the visibility is re
stricted.
"Somewhat similar condit-
ions obtain in George Street
at the intersection to Market
Street and in order to en
sure that motorists are read
ily aware that a footcrossing
is being approached, it is in
tended to display two signs,
one on either side of the
proposed crossing at this lo
cation.
"It would not be apparent
to a stranger that a school
was in the near vicinity and
the signs would therefore be
worded: "Watch for School
Children,'' would be display
ed in position approximately
150 feet from the crossing.
"Should Council concur
with these proposals upon
receipt of advice to that ef
fect arrangements will be
made to have the necessary
instruments of authority pre
pared and aproved by the
Commissioner of Police.
"Further particulars will
then bo supplied to Council
as to the exact positions for
each facility as described In
the instruments."
