Marshall's Till Al U.K. Back-Fires
General Marshall's sharp rebuke to Britain for supplying China with vital
war materials, back-fired in the U.S. Congress yesterday, when Congressional
sentiment demanded cessation of economic aid to Iron Curtain Countries.
It appears that Western

Soviet Satellites—with Ameri
can permission.
An amendment is to be made
to th e Appropriations Bill, ord
ering president Truman to end
economic aid to all countries
"trading with the enemy."
The House Foreign Affairs
Committee is drafitng out a
separate bill to shut off all aid,
military and economic.
Senator Harry Byrd, (Demo
crat, Virginia), supporting the
Senate amendment said: "It is
particularly aimed at Britain.
"The fact that Britain has
been sending war materials to
the Red Chinese through Hong
Kong is to me, a most out
rageous procedure. These war
materials are being used, not
only against Americans in
Korea, but against the British
troops who are there."
Britain has already banned
the supply of materials to
China.
It is believed that Pakistan
is considering a similar move.
In Singapore, the U.K. Gov
ernment request that supplies
of rubber for China be prohibi
ted, is being considered.
If the new Senate Bill to cut yet known.
off supplies to the Soviet satellite
countries is passed, it will un
doubtedly be treated as fulfilling
the United Nations clamour for
sanctions against China.
The present situation is con
sidered to be extremely danger
ous.
It is understood that the Aus
tralian Government will follow
Britain's action in preventing
the shipment of supplies to any
area where they may fall into
the hands of China.
