RACE FOE THE HEIGHTS.
... -The fighting.:at Cernay was formid
able. The roar of fchVguns was un
ceasing for three days/and tho valleys
were filled with the bodies of cattle
and debris of ruined villages.
When the French drove the Germane
from Tliaiin .(north-west of Mulhausen)
the f ormor attempted to throw a bridge
across the Thur River, rwest of Cernay.
On December 29 the Gtorman guns forc
ed them to retreat, but the Fiench
crossed early on tine 30th), ait a point
three miles 'higher up, opposite Thann.
The German guns them cut to pieces the
French forco guarding tho biidge, and
destroyed the pontoons, thus separating
the French troops from the right bank.
Before the French guns could reply, the
Germans disappeared in the forests audi
prepared to climb ? 'hill dominating the
French position. ?
Tlie French, seeing their gravo dan
ger, began to race for the heights. The
Chasseurs scaled two glacis"and a bar
rieafle of tree trunks;, and l after a rough
and tumble fight with bayonets and
l'Ule butts, the Chassejire made ? bril
liant charge of three miles up-hill and
gtuined the position.
The Germans advancing saw t)lio French
in position, and triod to turn, but it. was
too late. The French , guns opened on
their flanks at 1000' yards. Horses and
drivers were killed, ammunition wag
gons exploded, and one gun toppled to
the .bottom of the 'heighlt and was
smashed, to atoms. Thus SfceJubac'ii
was surrounded.
