NEW AXIS
LONDON, Thurs — Ger
mans in Sicily are attempt
ing to establish a strong line
of defences in the east of the
island and in order to do this
the Axis is . bringing rein
forcements froni Italy and
Germany.
This was revealed by Allied
Commander-in-Chief General Eis
enhower at a Press conference at
Allied headquarters yesterday.
A few hours later the Daily Mail
correspondent at Allied headquarters
cabled that the Axis positions in wes
tern and central Sicily had crashed.
'Everywhere in western and cen
tral Sicily the enemy is pulling out
as rapidly as possible towards Mes
sina in the north-eastern tip,' says
the. correspondent.
General Eisenhower gave war cor
respondents a review of the position
in Sicily, told them that the Eighth
Army was having a tough fight.
'Because of the nature of the
terrain and the location of the
enemy forces, the task facing the
Eighth Army, including the Can
adians, is one of bitter fighting
with a generally slow advance,'
he said.
'This gives the Americans the
chance of a more rapid advance
against less resistance. Thus they are
over-running considerable portions of
the island and confining the enemy
progressively to smaller areas.'
General Eisenhower went on to
explain that the resistance on the
Eighth Army's front was entirely
different from that on the front of
the American Seventh Army.
??=? He said that the defence line the
Germans were trying to establish in
the east of the island included Mt
Etna.
General Eisenhower added empha
tically that he ' was confident of a
complete Allied victory in Sicily.
