Hundreds of Perth workers from Maylands, Inglewood, Mt.
Lawley and North Perth districts had to walk to work from
Bulwer Street through this morning's light showers.
As late as 10.15 a.m., a stream of people was still pour
ing over the Barrack btreet
bridge into the city.
The reason was that trams
coming from these suburbs
were held up from 8.30 a.m. to
10.15 a.m. at Bulwer Street be
cause of a power breakdown
Secretary C. Raymond of the
W.A. Railway Department said:
'The breakdown was first thought
to be a fault at the East Perth
Power House, but the Tramways
branch later traced it to one tram.
'This tram had previously bro
ken down in the Inglewood area.
It was being towed to. the car
barn. After it had crossed Bulwer
Street, a fault in the electrical sys
tem caused a short circuit and this
blew out 'switches at the power
house.
'This cut off the power between
the line to Bulwer Street and
Perth, but did not affect the lines
beyond Bulwer Street.' ;
