" FOUR OF CREW INJURED.
Sydney, Today.
When the Wanganelia and the
trawler Durraween collided near
Montague Island a desperate ef
fort had to be made by the. crew,
of the trawler to keep her afloat.
This was revealed by one of the
crew. Four of the crew of 13 were
;njured in the collision, the master,
Captain S. Mills, receiving- a nasty
blow on the chest. Peter Stanhope,
one of the firemen, was hurt about the
head, and narrowly escaped serious
burns when blazing coals from the
furnace were, thrown near him.
So severe was the impact that sev
eral members of the crew immediately
ran for the lifeboat, but the position,
was not sufficiently serious to warrant
launching it. Three members of the
crew went to the hold fore-peak to
stem the flow of water, but it poured
in with alarming speed until the men
; were covered up to their necks. Blank
; ets and large squares of hessian were
used to block the gaps in the hull.
The pumps were manned and work
ed, desperately, and when they became
choked a hole has cut in the bulk
head permitting the water to run into
the fish chamber. The pumps were
then operated in the fish chamber,
and this overcame'the difficulty. The
men worked in relays for six hours,
and were very tired when they reach-'
ed Sydney. The Wanganelia was
floated in Cockatoo Dock for repairs
to her damaged starboard side.
