THE NEW PROTECTION.
The- electors of Australia have-a right
to know whether sir WHllam really
means to -carry out his new protection
poliey, or whether -h« Is merely using
that scheme as a bribe to induce mem.;
bers, particularly Labor members, to
vote for high duties. It is quite evi
dent that the practical carrying out of
the new protection Idea will require
a large army of officials. Has any -
definite plan been arranged? Is there
any evidence that the Government is
in earnest In this matter, and that It
will persist in the active administration
of the new scheme?^ We do not think
there is. Until, therefore, the Govern
ment comes forward with a practical
working scheme,. .it Is ttoa duty. of. the
representatives of the people to absor
lately Ignore the new protection altbf
gether, and to deal with the' various
duties purely on their merits— or de
merits. ' Parliament must dear with;'
one; thing at a time. When the tariff
has been dealt with and disposed of,' it
will Mien be the duty of Parliament to
deal with any concrete proposals the
Government may have in the way of
inaugurating what . is called the new
protection. It would never doforPar
liament to carry something which is
bad on the strength of a promise that
it will receive in return something
wihica fe good. ' - ?? ?
