NORTH'S TEN-MINUTE
BURST WINS
West Shows Improved Form
Showing its best form for the sea
son, West ftdrtnldi* outplayed North
Adelaide for three quartets at the
Showgrounds. A reshuffle of key posi
tions by Furier was successful, and
scoring five goals in the first 10
m Unites of the last term. North won a
tame exhibitioB. '
The standard of football was poor
throughout, bad kicking being the worst
feature. Wests accuracy in front of goal,
in addition to Its greater resource and vigor
in other parts of the field, made it appear
a more efficient team than North, and at
haX-tlme the home team was having by
far -Hie better of matters, and looked likely
to cause the surprise of the year by de
feating North.
There were several glaring weaknesses in
the visiting team, notably at centre naif
back, where Burton failed completely to
reproduce the rock-like exhibition he gave
In the Inter-State match In Melbourne.
The team generally appeared lackadaisical
and played slovenly football.
Encouraged by its success of the first
half. West fought with added spirit and
with proportionately greater success in the
third quarter, only to collapse before a
withering burst by North early in the last
quarter.
West Takes the Lead
After Farmer had failed to find the
mark. West Adelaide took control, and
only a Bterllng defence by Barrett, who re
peatedly whisked the ball away when it
was almost on the goal-line, saved North
from dropping a long way behind. Farmer,
closely pressed by three West defenders,
managed to snap his first and only goal
early in the second quarter, and when fur
ther goals came from Storer and McDowell.
the spectators settled themselves to watch
a goaUdcklng exhibition by North. Fleet
took lus task cheaply when lie was called
upon to check Williams, who was heading
for goal, and was surprised when he found
himself standing helplessly alone while
the West rover dashed in to score. This
following goals from H. Graham and HM.
caused the crowd to sit up. and there
after, until the last quarter. West was
always in front. Straight-kicking— at one
stage Its score was 5.1 — assisted West to
hold the lead.
?West began the third quarter with a great
rattle, getting the ball away at the bounce
in the centre in fine style. Matthews.
who was stationed at half-back, came in
to mldflftld for the bounce and he re
peately snapped up the North Adelaide
ruckmen'g knocks and set his team in mo
tion. West's lead grew to nearZy three
goals, and its supporters sighted victory.
In desperation North rallied, but Farmer
was belplcss. He lilt a post with one snot
and then the team lapsed Into Its former
unsystematic scrambling. West out
marked North— this superiority was especi
ally pronounced at this stage— and had
Barrett not repeated his performance of
the first quarter in stifling attacks In the
teeth of goal. West would have been five
or six goals ahead instead of two.
Hamilton, the Match Winner
Purler, realising that drastic measures
were necessary, changed the placing of bis
team for the last quarter. Burton was
called into ruck, Mangelsdoif taking his
place at centre half-back, and Hamilton
(half-forward left) and Taylor (centre
half-forward) changed places. The result
was electrifying. North Jumped Into its
best form in a twinkling, end a series of
concerted rushc*. in Wjlch Hamilton scin
tillated, swept West off its feet. Five goals
were UrtUed on. and West was beaten.
The rest of tiie quarter provided unin
teresting football. North being content to
hold lta lead, and West acknowledging de
feat. Six goals without a behind were
added by North during the quarter, to
West's 1 goal 2 behlnds. Scores:—
North Adelaide, 11 goals 11 behlnds.
West Adelaide, 9 goals 10 behlnds.
North Players Patchy
North players (ten-rally were patchy.
Barrett was tne only man who played con
sistently good football. 6ome of his last
second saves when in defence were most
spectacular. His handling of the ball on
the ground was brilliant and his marking
safe. Hamilton did not get a great deal
of the play until the last quarter, but his
clever turning and opeedy dashes were
always pretty to watch. In the last term
be rose to great heights, marking sensa
tionally and vigorously contesting tne
issue on the ground: Mangelsdorf showed
that he prefers the centre-half-back posi
tion, but he played sound football when
on the flank. Furier was strong and vigor
ous in ruck: Conrad showed that his long
spell has not dimmed his brilliance: Tay
lor was responsible for good work at
centre-half-forward: and Proud gave Ws
usual flawless display on the half -forward
flank. Burton was disappointing. a«d
Walter made an unimpressive debut la
league football. He has every physical ad
vantage, however, and another inaten or
two may see him a force at half-back
Hill was one of the best in the de
feated side. H3s balf-forward work !?
marked by speed on the pround. long punt
ing and good marking. Church was always
prominent with sound play in ruck find de
fence, and Matthews, at centre hull-back,
was al-*o outstanding until overshadowed
by Hamilton in the last quarter. The
strong West centre line. S?xton, Solcman.
and Shea, shared nonors with the North
trio. Lock. Mackay and Drew, none of the
six. players showing marked 6uporioritv
orer hi» opponent. Sexton, whenever in
direct opposition to Lock, generally had
the better or the argument. Mesecke was
responsible for eflecilvc Work in goal; Wil
liams scouted well, and H. Graham showed
and he 5r developing Into an alert, cap
able forward
