There was a keen demand for well
finished wethers of suitable weights at
the early sales, and these were dearer
than last week. Good ewes also sold
well. In the afternoon the advent of
rain caused fluctuations in prices, due
to varying numbers of buyers operating
in the showers, and values were gener
ally not quite equal to the morning
rapes. Lambs sold well early, and
prices were better than a week ago, but
in the afternon the demand was simi
larly affected by the rain. Exporters
were present, but operated sparingly.
The quotations for Iambs are given on
butchers' weights, which are about two
lb. a carcase higher than the export
weight, on which quotations were for
merly based.
Quotations (estimated price per lb.,
not allowing for Abattoirs charges to
butchers) : — Good to prime wether mut
ton, 3id. to 4d.; odd choice hoggets
and lightweights, higher; few heavy
weights, from 3sd-; good to prime ewes,
2Jd. to 3d.: good to prime Iambs, suit
able weights, 5Jd. to 6Jd.; few choice
and handyweights. higher; extra heavy
:rom 3d.
