PREPARING POK CHRISTMAS.
In preparation for Christmas the police
are now cleaning up the city of undesir
ables, who frequen- the streets. In the
Adelaide Police Court on, Tuesday two

John McCarthy, an elderly man. ad
mitted having at' Adelaide on December
4 had insufficient lawful means of sup

during the last ten days be had seen the
defendant about the west-end of the aty.
in company with convicted persons. He
had 6d. in his possession when arrested.
Sergeant Kennedy, who prosecuted, said
the defendant had been previously con
victed 27 times of idrunkemieag, U times
having insufficient lawful means of sup
port, and once each of larceny, assault,
and unlawful possession.

Charles Young, an elderiy man, deniel
having had insufficient lawful means
of support at Adelaide on Decem
ber 4. Plainclothes-Constable Stephens
said he had seen the defendant loafing
about the -west-end of the city daring
the week. He was usually in e halt
drunken condition, and aisociated^ with
convicted persons. On Thursday. Novem
ber 30, he saw rhe defendant in iaght
square with three convicted persons. H«,
admitted he wac not working anywhere,
and asked for a. chance, which was granted
him Since then the defendant had been
on the streets daily, at times under the
i&Dnenee of drink, and he had admitted
having done little or no work.
Piaindothes-Constable Taylor also gave
evidence.
Tbe defendant, *on oath, said he had
only come out of gaol three weeks aao,
and the convicted persons Trith whom be
had been associated -were those with whom
he had been working in gaol. He had
worked for Simpson & -Son for 30 years,
but owing to having been sent to gaol
recently he could not get his position
back again. He had been going round
with hw tools doing odd jobs, and n
given a chance would get work.
The magistrate said he would give the
defendant a, chance. There would be an
order for three months' impriaonroenit, the
?warrant to be herds-over for'48 hoars to
grre tbe defendant a chance to go to the
country.
