NATIONAL COUNCIL OF
WOMEN
First Meeting Of Year
The first meeting of the National
Council of Women for 1933 was held
on February 9 at the Adelaide Wo
men's Club. Peel street.
Mts. j. l. Leai presided, and save
a report of the meeting of the Aus
tralian council, held in Melbourne in
November. This was the first meet
ing of this council as now constituted.
Delegates from all States were pre
sent.
Miss Poole read the resolutions
whine had been submitted and passed.
These included national insurance, the
cinema, the Australian aborigines, the
pre-school child, and the drug traffic.
Mrs. Leal also gave an account of
the hospitality and entertainments
which, had been given.
Miss Phebe Watson said that during
ier recent visit to Melbourne she had
wen much interested in the struggle
between Mr. Parkhill. on behalf of
Australia, and the American film dis
tributors. She stJOke of block booking,
bv which the American distributors
'^hed to make Australians taie a
number of films in one lot, without
allowing a choice.
Miss Beatrice Ternan gave a short
address on nubile speaking for women.
She said that women who wanted to
take part in tmblic affairs should
qualify themselves to do eo by takine
trouble to express themselves well, and
by overcoming: nervousness, which
tpnded to dissioate their masnetism;
that they 6hould cultivate clear and
resonant sneaking voices, in which cor
rect breathing plays an important
Dart.
The evening concluded with a short
musical Drosramme by Miss Dunn and
Mrs. Chapman followed by refresh
ments.
