Woman Assaulted By
Step-Father
John Paakola, a Finn, of Queen
street, Alberton, pleaded guilty, before
Mr. G. W. Halcombe, SAL, in the Port
Adelaide Police Court vesterdav. to
having on Saturday maliciously woun
ded Beryl Thelma Newton (23) by
striking her with a tin pot. Ke was
committed for sentence at the next
Criminal Session. Bail was not al
lowed. Inspector J. E. Noblet prose
cuted. The court was cleared during
the hearing.
Beryl Newton said that the defen
dant was her stepfather. He went
into her room about 3.30 a.m. on Sat
urday, and was ordered out. He went
back about four hours later and picked
up a tin and threw it at her head.
It left a cut over her left eye. De
fendant then threw another tin pot,
which hit her on the right elbow.
Defendant then rushed at the witness
and gripped her round the throat. She
cried out, and her mother came in.
'Some people live like a lot of pigs,
and should be tried by the law of the
pigsty,' remarked Mr. Halcombe.
Further Charged
Later in the day Paakola was charged
with having, at Haslam. West Coast,
on divers dates between March 1, 1925,
and April 30. 1925, indecently assaulted
Beryl Thelma Newton, a female under
the age of 16. He pleaded guilty and
was committed for sentence, .
