East-West Air Mail's Night
Landings
The East-West air mail from Perth
arrived at Parafield at 5.30 pjn. yes
terday, five hours late, after a series
of incidents which would have been
more exciting' had they not been a
striking example of the organisation
of tbe service against mishaps.
About an hour out from Kalgoorlie
on Tuesday afternoon the viastra air
liner was forced to land through oil
pipe trouble. As the delay in attend
ing to the oil pipe had made a night
arrival at Forrest, the stopping Dlace
between the two capitals, inevitable,
the beacons along the route were
lighted, and word was telegraphed
ahead to Forrest that the extra living
involved vrould mean an intermediate
night landing for fuel. Actually when
the land was made, usins the plane's
powerful landing light, the machine
was short of the pre-arranged soot, but
the earlier descent had berm observed,
and fuel was soon available.
The machine arrived at Forrest at 2
ajn. yesterday, where the passengers
found waitin? them the hot dinner
tbat had been ready for them half a
down hours before.
The flight was resumpd in the morn
ing. bi»t a recurrence of the oil trouble
*t. Cedmin -nut the plane's arrival be
