UNITY OF FARMERS
ONE ORGANISATION DESIREO
To the Editor
Sir— Farmers throughout the State
will be greatly disappointed on reading
the letter in 'The Advertiser' from
the executive of the Freedom Associa
tion Perhaps a little further in
formation is necessary. When this
matter was discussed at the conference,
I stated that unity of farmers was

come tozether in one association. Seeing
that we were all agreed that we couid
only sain that unity under the con
stitution of the Protecticn Association,
I offered the constitution to all other
associations to come in and work under
it and the present executive until
March, when the annual meeting would
be held. Then all those at the
annual meeting could erercise their
votes and vote In the elections to the
official positions. Nothing could be
fairer than that. Representatives of
the Freedom Association Intimated
that they would place the matter before
tiieir executive.
The executive officers nave evidently
met and reaffirmed their constitution.
because of the vital issue of compul
sory pooling. If they have considered
the constitution of the Protection
Association it is puzzling how tbe
issue of compulsory pooling comes into
consideration at all. Compulsory pool
ing, or any form of co-operative mar
keting, is not mentioned anywhere in
the constitution, which is neither in
favor nor against it. So why have
another association and keep the
farmers apart to fight against the
Issue when all the fiRhVIng can be done
under the present constitution of my
association? The matter can be dis
cussed, and if the majority are in favor
of fighting the issue, then Ihe execu
tive must abide by the will of the
majority. Organised unity of the
farmers is the vital issue at stake.
Therefore if the minority have to submit
let them do so gracefully, and still re
main as one bodv. and not divide the
fanners further than they are -to-day.
I extremely regret the decision of the
eexcutive of the Freedom Association.
It must be obvious to all the rank and
file of that body that the farmer will
never become united under the con
stitution of the Freedom Association,
with th5 present executive. Therefore,
the only way for the farmers to be
come united and speak with one voice
is to join the association that offers it
to him: that is. the Protection Associa
tion, which realises that if we are to
{rain unity we must not shut tbe door
of organisation in the face of the
farmer who may be favorable to pool
ing.
Referring to the last paragraph of
the letter of the Freedom Association,
all those matters ' can be discussed
under one constitution and. whatever
the result, let the majority rule. Fur
ther, before a compulsory pool can be
brought into effect, the farmer will
vote on the question in no uncertain
way when the ooll Ls taken. Neither
Mr. Cadd. Mr. Lanorsford. nor any exe
cutive will have the right to deny ttie
fanner the freedom to exercise his
franchise as his win dictates. — I am.
Sir. &c.. -r
T. C. STOTT,
Secretary SJL Wbeatgrowers' Pro
tection Association.
