derstood that in 1893, when the academy
was lirst oinmed, the public bad not begun
to recomiise tlie value of the introduction
of fhorthuud, bookkeeping, and kindred
business subjects into die ordinary school
curriculum, and Inanv were inclined to op
pose tiie idea. Their educational value
was not recognised, . and this waa due \tq

commercial educa.uon was generally found
to be practically worthless wlien the stu
dent entered an office. Since that time,
