NEW ZEALAND.
Mr. C. J. Haselder, the Under
secretary for Justice, has retired
from the service, and been succeeded
by Mr. Waldegrave, the cliief
clerk of the department.
A stockman who rode through
the Weka Pass the other day states
that he passed through a cloud of
moths, which settled on himself
and his horse m such numbers that
there was not a square inch of
either uncovered. The cloud kept
with him for a quarter of a mile,
when he got free of it. The moths
rose from tbe road like a sheet of
holland cloth being lifted into the
air.
The naval squadron, consisting
of H.M.S.S. Orlando,' Wallaroo',
Katooniba,and Ringarooma, arrived
at Auckland on March 12.
It has Ixen decided to open the
Wellington Exhibition on or about
the 25th November next.
Captain Clayton, A.D.C. to His
Excellency the Governor, will not
return to the colony, but joins his
regiment, the Guards.
The Wellington Cathedral fund
is gradually mounting up, the latest
donations acknowledged by the
treasurer bringing the total to
£3,313 Is. 9d.
Tiie Auckland Burns Club has
agreed to contribute ten guineas to
the statute of Highland Mary, and
the Burns Club at the Thames has
given five guineas to Mr. W. M'Cul
lough, M.L.C., who is the accredited
representative of the Dunoon de
monstration.
A divorced couple were recently
re-married at Invercanjill.
Mr. T. W. Gale hasbeen elected
chairman of the Wellington Har
bour Board for the current year.
It is understood that the late H.
S. Tilfen left £2,000 to the Napier
Children's Home, £1,000 to the
Cathedral Parish, and £1,000 to
the Bishopric Endowment Fund.
ft is said that Mr. Ronayne, the
general manager of the New Zea
land railways, received £5,000 as
his share of the purchase money
of the Wealth of Nations mine.
The Divinity Scholarship of £25
a year ror tnree years offered
recently by St. John's Church,
Wellington, has been awarded to
Mr. James Thomson, a former
pupil of Wellington College, and
brother of Mr. Andrew Thomson,
clerk of the Magistrate's Court at
Wanganui.
Red deer are being collected by
the Acclimatisation Society and
placed on Mr. Matthews's station
at the Wairarapa Lake, with the
view of ultimately liberating them
on the Tararua ranges.
It was stated at the meeting of
the hospital trustees, Wellington,
that, owing to the improved sani
tary condition of the city, conse
quent on the better drainage,
typhoid has decreased 50 per cent.
