THE NEXT MEETING OF
PARLIAMENT.
Parliament stands prorogued to
June, and will probably be sum-
moned to meet for despatch of busi-
ness in July. It would be prema-
ture at present to speculate upon
the course Ministers are likely to
pursue. They are bound to show
that they are in a position to carry out
their boasted retrenchment to the ex-
tent of £26,000 on the present year's
expenditure, without any increase
of taxation. This they will find a
very difficult task to perform in the
face of the fact that the Municipali-
ties must increase their rates in con-
sequence of the withdrawal of the
grants-in-aid, amounting to at
least one half of the so termed
£26,000 retrenchment. No one in
or out of Parliament envies the pre-
sent Ministry their position, and
worse than that they do not seem to
be either proud of it themselves, or
competent to hold it long — Nous
verrons.
