THE FUNDS-MAYoOOTH AND OREGON,
j (From th* Morning Post, April
THE fact that the Maynooth question is to be
made a government question, and tiie doubt
which exists as to the way i ti which Sir Robert
Peel's proposition for an increased grant t«» the
Papal establishment may be met, added to the
partial distrust that previously existed relative
to the Oregon, caused a temporary fall in Con-
sols of about three-halt per cent. The lowest
price for the account « as 98§ ; and, even at
the close of business, there had been na consi-
derable rally.
("From tJie Morning Chronicle, April 12.)
The public funds are heavy, «"d have expe-
rienced a fall of one half per cent ; but the sa e«
have been chiefly speculative, and cof.fi'ted for
tlte most part to the dealers. The speculative
sales are attributed to various reasons; by -vome
to apprehensions respecting the position of the
ministry on the grant to Maynooth, by others to
appréhendons respecting the <dtima?e resu'tof
the Oregon question, and by other* to the state
of the account. The difference with the United
States is certainly giving rise to s mie uneasi-
ness. The immediate ct us«-, however of this
decline in the National Securities is attiil HI led
to the state of (»aities tu parliament with respect
to Irish policy.
