THE ALBANY BUTTER FACTORY
(To tue EûitoO.
Sir,-From the tone of tue Premier's
remarks re the Albany butter factory
ihe public may get the idea that tho
directors have made a grievous error
iii erecting so small a plant. We have
now been' running eight months and so
far have not had sufficient cream tb
keep the plant runniug quarter time.
\o doubt, we shall more thaa double
our output during the coming season,
j 3o far as we can 'judge our present
[>laut will amply serve ns for the next
Ive years. Had we borrowed £10,000
;ustead of £1,500, as the Premier sug
.jests, we should have a white elephant
nu our hauds, .such as the cool store
was when we took it over from the
Government. Then, again, he says we
just have a bacon factory. Quite so,
we can get the factory, but where is
he pork to come from ! With bran, pol
lard aud oilcake at prices out of all
proportion to their- feeding value, and
pork selliug at 1/1 per lb., it would, '
while prescut conditions obtain, be ab
?solutely idiotic to erect a costly plant,
tu conclusion I may say had thc Gov
?rumeut boomed thc dairying industry 1
is they did thc fruit, we should have
been iu a far better position all round.
-Tours etc., .
