TWO COASTAL 1
BURGLARIES
Cash and Goods
Worth £400
Stolen
During the carly hours of Wed
nesday morning and somo time
during Wednesday night, two bur
glaries wore committed in Coastal
towns. At Devonport, a safe con
taining £256 was removed from a
skin storo, and at Smithton, goods
and postal notes , to the value of
£149 were stolen,'
Tho skin store of Messrs Wilcox
Mofflin at Devonport was broken into,
and an iron safe containing £230 was
removed. Dater tho safe, which had
been forced open with thc aid ol' a
hammer and crowbar, was iotiud in tho
river opposite tho Devonport Marino
Board's quarry on tho Spreyton road.
Entranco was gained to the build
ing, which is situated on the Espion
ado near the corner of Best street, by
forcing the main door. There was evi
dence that other doors had been tried.
Tho safe was removed from the office
and taken to thc place where it was
found in a utility truck belonging.to
tho firm. Tho sledge-hammer and bar
used to open it were taken from a rail
way shed not far away.
TWO MEN CHARGED
At the Devonport Police Court last
evening, before Mr. H. R. Dobbie,
P.M., Daniel M'Elroy and William
Clifford Kuowles wore charged with
having, on or about Juno 27, broken
into and entered tho store, and with
having taken therefrom a safe con
taining £250 in money, also a number
of documents, tho total value, includ
ing that of tho safe, being £206.
Knowles was also charged with hav
ing been found in possession of a £.10
note, throe £5 notes, a quantity of sil
ver and copper coins reasonably, sup
posed to have been stolen, without
being able to give a satisfactory ac
count of his possession thereof.
M'Elroy was similarly charged willi
respect to possession of a £10 note, a
£ü noto, a 10/ note and silver coins.
Detective Tomkinson, who repre
sented the police, nsked for a remand
for eight days. This was granted, and
accused were remanded in custody un
til July G.
Mr. Kevorell M'lntyre, who appear
ed for accused, asked for bail.
This was strongly opposed by Detec
tive Tomkinson, who said both men
were recent arrivals from tho main
land.
Bail was refused.
The two men were arrested in Dev
onport on Wednesday by Inspector
Wright, of Burnie, and Detective Tom
kinson.
SMITHTON BOBBERY
Goods and postal notes to tho value
of £149 and a quantity of clothing
coupons were stolen from Messrs. Grey
Bros.' store at Smithton between 0 p.m.
on Wednesday and S a.m. yesterday.
Investigations by tho police showed
that entry was effected by forcing a
window at tho rear of tho building.
Included in tho stolen articles were
200 pairs of women's hosiery, men's
and' women's underclothing, women's
rubber knee boots, men's shoes and
three suitcases._
