LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
(Mr. C. J. Ëady) took tho chair in th<
Legislativo Council at 7.30 p.m..
Mr. Darling asked whether tho Gov
ernment had employed a mau from tho
mainland as publicity officer, aud if so
at what salary.
Tho Attorney-General (Mr. M'Don
ald replied: "Yes, in a temporary ca
pacity at £800 per annum."
Mr, Darling gave notice to ask the
Minister to table tho police report on
inquiries into tho alleged irregularities
in tho Forestry Department, together
with all correspondence.
Mr. Loncrgnn was proceeding to ask
a question regarding tho alleged mis
conduct of two formor members of tho
Polico Force, when the Attornoy-Gen
eral rose to a point or order. Ho said
Mr. Lon organ was not in order in mak
ing a chargo against peoplo under cover
of privilege.
Tho Prosident (5fr. Eady) said lie
would allow Mr. Loncrgnn to stato the
questions, adding that he, the Presi
dent, would consider tho point raised
by Mr. M'Donald later.
Tho questions, which subsequently
woro allowed, were: Is it a fnet that
in November a polico, officer, uftor hav
ing driven the Premier to Burnie, re
turned to Launceston with tho car.
picked up another polico officer and
two women and went to Evandale,
whero both men becai/m intoxicated;
that theso officers, accompanied by the
sumo womeu, returned to the Evandale
Hotel tho next night and after again
getting very intoxicated assaulted tho
licensee and his assistant to such an
cxtont that they had to bo tnkon to
hospital for medical frcntmcnt; that
uftor reports by polico officers it was
found that tliero wero nine charges to
bo laid against them, but before action
could bo talton ugainst them they re
signed; and that the two mon were
drivors of Government ears at a salary
of approximately £S a week each?
