(From our Correspondent.)
Sydney, Monday Evening.
This is a holiday in the' strictest sense of the
term ; all the public offices are closed, and none
of the shops are open except such as afford sustenance,
refreshment, and medicine and every
house is almost deserted by its inhabitants, who
are seeking pleasure abroad. The usual festivities
are going on, and although the morning
was somewhat gusty and cloudy, I have not
observed any diminution of the accustomed
gaiety of the anniversary ; nor heard of anything
calculated to check it. The afternoon
has turned out beautifully fine, and very cool
for the season, and I have no doubt it will be
duly appreciated and enjoyed by the holiday
folk.
By arrivals from England yesterday we have
some news, which you will see in this day's
Herald. To-day we have the Portenia from
San Francisco, and the Cape Horn and Sir
John Byng from Launceston. There is a
rumour afloat that another fire has occurred at
San Francisco, but owing to the prevalence of
festivities I have not been enabled to ascertain
particulars.
