UNEMPLOYMENT!
Federal Policy.
STIMULUS TO INDUSTRY.
New Basis Adopted.
CANBERRA, Wednesday.
An entirely new basis for its
employment policy was decided
upon by the Federal Cabinet to
day, in the light of experience
gained by the councils in the
various States which are adminis
tering the Commonwealth unem
ployment relief scheme.
The Commonwealth policy which
will he recommended to the Pre
' miers at the conference in Can
berra on June 28 is understood to
emphasise the greater advantage
ovor public works undertakings of
direct stimulus to industry and
private enterprise generally.
Ono council is believed to have made
a strong case to this effect, and has
pointed out that some works were of
doubtful value, and might not have
been recommended, but that the urgency
of providing work demanded action of
some kind.
NATIONAL ORGANISATION.
A sch cm o will bo placed beforo the
Premiers for the creation of a national
organisation which will operate with
the Stato councils, which in turn will
co-ordinate the activities of a network
of voluntary committees, representing
not only all forms of industry, but also
citizen bodies, especially those concern
ing themselves with thc problem of
worklcss women and boys.
Ministers feel that as a result of the
Premiers' Conference, at which employ
ment mid finance will be practically the
only subjects for discussion, a real and
permanent step towards reducing unem
ployment will be taken.
