Captain Gilmore, who has arrived here
to watch the course of events on behalf of
the New South Wales Government, re-
mains till the arrival of the next mail.
The probability of England becoming
involved in the present Continental com-
plications is considered very remote.
The schooner David and Jessie, of Mel-
bourne, has been wrecked at Colombo.
The Japanese have declared war against
the Coreans.
The Japanese Government forbade an
engagement between a French frigate and
a German frigate in Japanese waters.
Sailed for Launceston — Barques Alfred
and Araunah.
MELBOURNE, Monday, Oct. 24.
The case against Supple for firing at
Mr G. P. Smith with intent to kill has
been postponed until Thursday, upon an
objection raised by Mr Fisher, Smith's
counsel, that a prisoner sentenced to
death cannot be put on his trial for a minor offence.
Matthew Jones has been sentenced to
three years' penal servitude for perjury.
Immense excitement exists in the city
over the mail news.
It has been raining hard, and there is
a possibility of the V.R.C. Spring Meet-
ing being postponed in consequence of the
unsatisfactory condition of the Flemington
Course.
Heavy floods have occurred at Smythes-
dale.
One hundred and thirty tons of quartz
from Gleasons' reef at Smythesdale have
been crushed, and yielded five hundred
ounces of gold.
Tuesday. Oct. 25.
Elton, the waiter, who murdered his
stepson, aged 2½ years, about the 1st
September last, has been found guilty and
sentenced to death.
The V.R.C. Spring Meeting, fixed to
commence on the 29th instant, has been
postponed for a week, owing to the bad weather.
The R.M.S.S. Avoca anchored in the
bay at 5 o'clock this afternoon.
