THE QUKKK'S BIRTHDAY ATHOBABT
TOWN.
The anniversary of tbe birth of her
Majesty the Queen wu celebrated In Hobart
Town, the Umuiy aays, with all the genuine
loyalty for which Tamantans bave became
proverbial. The day waa observed aa a
general holiday, and then was a total sus
pension of business of all triads. The wea
ther wu much more favorable than had been
anticipated. There was a cold wind blowing
the gTcater part of tbe day, and the ap
pearance of the sky waa very threatening,
bat the rein kept off, and all who ven
tured out did not Buffer the inconveniences
of a wet day. There wu any amount of bunt
ting flvlng from various prominent parts of
the city. Mulgrave Battery flagstaff sported
a full display of flags, and a portion of tbe
shipping followed tbe same example ; but
a stranger would have imagined that loyalty
ceased at the T.B.N. Co.'a pier, for beyond
a very dirty looking colored piece of calico
flying- on the Government schooner, none of
the vessels In and near the Constitution Dock
deigned to display any of tbeir bunting.
Nor wu the flagstaff at the Queen's Battery
decorated, some mischievous individual
having cut and uken the halyarda. At
noon, a Boyal Salute was fired at the
Queen's Battery, Sergeant-Major Hood and
Muter Gunner Chlsholm being assisted by
a number of volunteers. Tbe point of
attraction wu the Domain, to which a
ouruberof persons wenteitlier toenjoy anout
lag, or for tbe purpose of eeclag womc aporla.
In regard to these, if the comparatively
small amount of Interest which was taken
in tb.e various evenU Is aqy nriterion to go
by, then we are afraid the sports were not
nearly u successful u was expected. The
Monarch took a small number of excur
sionists to New Norfolk, and the levee at the
Town Hall wu well attended.
TUB LEVEE.
His Excellency the Governor held his
second levee at the Towd Hall in the after
noon. It is somewhat out of tbe uiual
couneto hold ordinary levees at the Town
Hall, but various alterations and repairs
which have been going on for some time at
Government House rendered it necessary to
depart from tbe customary practice. His
Excellency, who wu attended by his cousin,
Captain Btourtoo, and Mr Wcld;Blundcll,
private secretary, has not quite recovered his
attaok of gout, for be walked quite lame,
and wu compelled to use a stick.
