Horticultural Show.
The Horticultural show of Wednesday
last took every one by surprise. It was
anticipated in consequence of the short
notice given, and the smallness of the
amount of the prizes offered, that the
exhibition would contrast unfavourably
with those of previous seasons, but on the
contrary, the show was pronounced superior
to any we have had of late, and quite equal
to the first exhibitions. There were not
so inany visitors as usual, but as upwards
of Five Founds was taken at the door, and
the sum ordinarily collected was not much
exceeding that amount, we must suppose
that there were a smaller number of free
admittances. The show both of fruit and
vegetables was good. The lateness of the
season was against any exhibition of
flowers, and we saw but two bouquets.
Apong the fruits some gigantic apples
and a few egg plums shown by Mr Jecks
attracted much attention. A sample of
Constantia grapes (black) by Mr Devenish,
and of dried Zante currants by the same
gentleman deservedly obtained prizes.
The vegetables were generally of good
quality, potatoes and pumpkins especially
fine. We saw a small lot of asparagus,
the only sample we believe, in the room.
There were some peas, but they were very
poor, the season being too far advanced.
A sample of gram was exhibited, and Mr
Padbury sent a sample of very fair Colo
nial wine, made at Henly Park, and which
had been two years in bottle.
Mr Padbury has, we learn, offered a
prize of £5 for two year.?, for the best 56 j
lbs of Western Australian sugar from the
Holcus. It is hoped that his liberality will
induce people who cultivate this fftanfio
attempt the manufacture of sugar. ^
The government school room, in which
the exhibition took place, was tastefully
ornamented for the occasion, and during
the show the visitors were treated -with
some pianoforte music by Mrs Curtis, who
kindly consented to preside at the in
strument. His Excellency the Governor
was not present, being absent from town;
and from other causes many were away who
would otherwise have attended, and who
generally do attend.
Under the present active Secretary we
hope and believe that the Society will
rapidly recover from its late depression, that
funds will again be collected, and that each
exhibition will, (the state -of the season
permitting), eclipse its predecessor. We
hereto append the list of successful com
