AVIATOR'S ACTION.
An action, which recalled the attempt
by Capt. G. S. Matthews, in September,
1919, to fly from Great Britain to Aus-
tralia, was mentioned to Mr. Justice Mc-
Arthur in the Practice Court on Monday
(remarks The Melbourne Argus). Before
leaving England, Capt. Matthews is said
to have entered into an arrangement with
the Larkin-Sopwith Aviation Company in
London. He reached Bali Island, in the
East Indies, where the aeroplane was
wrecked. With his mechanic he came from
Java to Sydney, bringing the wreckage
with him. Arriving in Australia, Capt.
Matthews entered the employment of the
Larkin Aircraft Supply Company, which
is a successor to the Larkin-Sopwith Avia-
tion Company. The arrangement was
that Capt. Matthews should reconstruct
the wrecked machine (The Wallaby) on
certain terms, among them being that upon
the completion of the work he was to
receive an interest in the company. Sub-
sequently Capt. Matthews instituted pro-
ceedings against the company, alleging that
it had not carried out its part of the
agreement. The Larkin Aircraft Supply
Company lodged a counterclaim, and paid
£550 into Court in full satisfaction of
Capt. Matthews's claim. By consent, an
order was made that the £550 should be
paid out to the aviator, apart from £50
in respect of costs. The counterclaim
was withdrawn.
