PREFERENCE TO RETURNED
SOLDIERS.
"Will" -the Government communicate
with the Minister of Defence," asked Mr.
James in the House of Assembly on Tuesday,
to see if some of the returned soldiers
who have been discharged and are
not fit for further. military service, can
be put in charge of transports or can
be any other work locally", in place of
some of the people who have not gone to
the front at all?" The Premier, in reply,
said employment for returned soldiers
was given through the bureau established
for that purpose, and where the men
could not follow their usual avocation
the Government were fitting them as"
fat, as possible to follow new callings.
Ike State Government were giving preference
in employment to returned soldiers,
and the Minister of Defence was
giving preference to returned soldiers for
home service duties in military camps.
He did not know that anything further
was to be gained by communicating with
the Federal Minister, but he could assure
Mr. James that the State War Council
was taking an possible steps to afford
employment to the men when they came
back. The Minister of Industry, at' a
later stage, stated that whatever was done
elsewhere, in South Australia the Government
would never support any proposal
that a man who had gone and fought for
his country should be forced to join a
union before he was given work.
