THE SUEZ CANAL.-The question of widening
the Suez Canal is provoking no inconsiderable
amount of agitation among tho mercantile and
' engineering ?classes in England. It ia an under-
taking that has been well within the range of prob-
abilities fara long time, and some time since the
project had boon advanced well beyond tho embryo
stage. But like many a world-wide neoossity, tho
scheme has beoa pigeon-holed. This is alleged to he
due to the apathy of the Egyptian authorities, but
surely tho Khedive and Nu bar Pasha are not to bo
allowed to rule in obatruoting a work that is
fraught with the utmost importance to the mari-
time interest of the world. This is a matter that
direotly affects Australia, and this country should
I not bo tho last to raino her voioo in protest against
such culpablo dilatoriness. Those who have passed
through that watery highway cannot but have been
I astonished at tho waste of time that is foroed upon
Bhips of large burden. Fivo miles an hour as tho
limit of speed, and then to cast anchor at sunset,
j aro restrictions that novar can.be removed while
the cm al romaias In its present state.
