Irish Holdings Act.
LONDON, WEDNESDAY.-In the House of Com-
mons the debate on the motion for the introduction
of a Bill for the extension of Lord Ashbourne's
Irish Holdings Act has concluded. The Act pro-
vides for the advance of money to tenant3 desirous
of purchasing holdings.
An amendment moved by Mr. Gladstone, pro-
posing to deal with arrears of rent in Ireland on a
basis similar to that adopted in regard to the Scotch
Crofters, was rejected by S4, the Government votes
being 330 ; and for Gladstone's amendment 246.
The Act was read a first time. Several Glad
stonians voted with the Government
Mr. John Dillon said that tenants might repudiate
payment unless Home Bule was granted.
