On Friday evening Grand Master Brother;
W." H. Austin 'and Grand Secretary,' Brofl
T. Kemp, of .thc M.U., uccon.panled by
District Secretary Bro. II, B. Waterhouse,
arrived nt; Coif's llurbour from Grafton,
and were received hy tho olllcers of tho
local Lodge at tho Pier Hotel.

. Tho Grand Master delivered a very Inter-
esting address on tho progress -, of tho
Order, and gavo many hints* tbl tho*; bfllcors
of tho local Lodge ns,£'icfctho'way they
should conduct the business. After tho or-
dinary business wnsjoyer, tho brethren sat
down to a banquet, j^whlch was attended
by about 50 .members of tho Order I and

tendered, on behalf of.-.tho Ideal Lodge and

Grand Master. He said they should take it
as a very high compliment Indeed that this
place should bo the first visited by tho
Grand Master after his installation. Ho
gavo tho tonst of tho "Mnnehosloy .Unity,"
coupled with tho nome of, tho
Grund Mnstor, Bro. ,Austin, who respon-
ded in a very eloquent si>cech. He express-
ed his groat pleasure that ho' lind boen
nITorded nn opportunity of visiting such a
progressive town ns Colt's Harbour; and
trusted that tho Lodge hero would grow,in
a corresponding degree. Ho reviewed tho
proceedings nt tho onnunl' Conference hold,
in Grafton Inst wonk, which, ho said, mnrk
od nn epoch in ti;c history of tho Oddfel-
lows in Australia, as it was undoubtedly
tlie niost important conference over held,

tho Order ns a result of tho proceedings
thero, and gave a lucid explanation of tho
IcfTect tho consolidation of the Donoflt
Funds would have upon tho members, nnd
especially upon tho younger ones, Ho
pointed out that no longer would they de-
pend for their benefits upon tho local
finnis, ns under tho now nrrnngoments every
member would participate in tho funds of
tho whole Order, which amounted In this
Stn te alone to over half a million. Ho
spoke of , the . great bonollts that tho youn-
ger members joining, from 111 to 20
years, would gain by thc reduction in tho
foes of 50 per cent. Ho expressed surprise
nt the great resources of the distrlot and
what he had seen that day, nnd had no
doubt whatever ns to tho futuro before
the town and district. Ho thanked tho
Lodgo for their cordial reception and for
the banquet tendered to him, which wcro
beyond anything thnt ho expected hero, es-
pecially ns tho whole thing was got up at
such «bort notice.
Tho' health of Bro. T. Kemp, Grand
Secretary, was proposed hy Uro. II. ll.
Waterhouse, District Secretary, and Uro.
T. Kemp responded in a humorous and
witty speech, which wns received with loud
applause.
The toast was also spoken to by Uros.
Osberg, Lansdown, Herd, Dennie, nnd
O'Sullivan.
Tho Chairman gave the toast of tho
"Clarence Uiver District," coupled with tho
mime of the District Secretary, Uro. H.
U. Waterhouse, who in his reply detailed
the progress mode by the District, and
especially of the new Lodges Dorrigo and
Coif's Harbour. Ile also thanked the Lodgo
for nominating him nt the recent Confer-
ence for tho position ot Deputy Grand
Master. Tho toast of "the Chairman" was
proposed by tho Grand Master, and hon
'oured jnost cordially.
During the evening" songs mid recitations
were rendered by Uros. Kemp, Lansdown,
Marsden, Herd,- Morris, nnd Kiddle.
Tho party left for Dorrigo, whero they
will be tendered a reception by tho local
Lodge.
At Maclean.
About 20 of tho delegates who attended
the Oddfellows' Conference in Grafton were'
bnnqiiettcd by tho members of tho Maclean
lodge on Friday night. Tho spread was
one of tho lie'st over served In the, town,
and had been prepared by thc wives:of tho
members. About 100 'persons sat down to
thc tables. After it became nppurent that
the Indies who attended the tables could no
longer tempt anyone to partake of tho
choleo dishes and delicacies, a long toast
list was entered upon. Mr. H. J. Till oc-
cupied tho chnlr, und proposed 'the "Man-
chester Unity," wnich was responded to by
Messrs. Crofts, Gardner and Boll. Tho
"iLoyal Star ííf Hopo Lodge" was proposed
¡¡.y Mr. II. Cox, and responded to l>y Messrs.
W. Boden, W. D. Robertson and George
Davis. Mr. .1. M'Kinnon proposed "Kin-
dred Societies." which was responded to by
Mr. T. Noonan, of the Guilds. Mr. Hogg,
Broken Ililli, proposed "Prosperity to tho
District," and spoke in most flattering
terms of tho wonderful beauty of tho dis-
trict and its vnst resources. "Tho Visitors"
was proposed by Mr. Goorge Davis, and re-
sponded to by delegates from all 'parts of
tho Stole, each of whom 'spoke in tho most
glowing terms of thc district and its peo-
ple. Mr. Crofts proposed "Tho Chairman,"
anid tho company dispersed as tho Kolla
tina carno along nt 1 o'clock.
