"MEAT PRODUCERS WILL
TAKE STAND"
In view of the decision of butchers throughout Tas-
mania to introduce an appraisement system for the pur-
chase of stock it could be anticipated that the producers
would not yard their stock until the restrictions
were lifted.
rpHIS WAS STATED yesterday by
tho state president ot the Tas-
manian Farmers' Federation (Mr.
W. V. French). .
"It should be remembered," Mr.
French said, "that a better price
can bo obtained by producers in
the store yards than in the fat
yards.
"Producers are not prepared
to accept lower prices for their
stock."
He said the breeders attribut-
ed the present high prices to the
number of sheep being used for
store purposes and the correspond-
ing shortage of fat stock.
The federation had shown very
markedly its spirit of willingness
to co-operate with ali interest-
ed bodies by sending full repre-
sentation lo the conference held at
Launceston on Wednesday.
Mainland Position
MELBOURNE-By a notification
to be published to-day the execu-
tive of the Meat and Allied Trades
Federation recommends to its
members that week's notice of dis
missal be given to their employ-
ees forthwith.
. This will affect the employ-
ees of roughly 1220 retail
butchers' shops in Melbourne.
This recommendation to its
members that a week's notice of dis
lion on account of the small num-
bers of livestock purchased and
the fact that no distribution to
shops will bo made from the pool
this week. The action has also
been taken because in the opin-
ion of the federation normal trad-
ing will probably be impossible
for some little time.
To Lift Control?
The Australian Meat Board af-
firmed the principle that existing
war-time controls applying to the
meat industry should be lifted as
soon as practicable, said a state-
ment issued by the board yester-
day.
Affirmation of this principle was
coupled with the suggestion that.
the board would keep the Govern-
ment advised with regard to the
anticipated supply position, so that
as early as possible a date or
dates for the lifting of these con-
trols could be foreshadowed.
