MEAT WORKERS.
A WEAK-KNEED UNION.
SYDNEY, February 12.
An application was made -to Judge Hey
don in the Industrial Court to-day for the
cancellation of the registration of the Aus
tralian Meat Industry Employes' Union.
Mr. Coghlan (for the union) applied for
an adjournment to allow members to vote
by a secret ballot on a suggestion ad
vanced by tie Minister for Labour and
Industry (Mr. Beeby). In the meantime
everything would be done to prevent the
difficulty from being intensified.
Judge Heydon— H the union, cannot keep
its members in order what is the use of
saying it will do what it can? It is no use
coming to the Court when it is continually
flouted. T*yo persons have refused to
recognise an amended award. Why did
the union not instantly order these men
to comply with the award? The union has
no difficulty in punishing its members
when it wishes to punish them.
Mr. Coghlan said the ballot was sug
gested with the object of compelling the
men to recognise the award.
His Honor — I am tired of continually
humouring men of whom it is said that
their standard of intelligence is eo low iliat
they should not be judged by other people.
It is time that a little consideration was
shown the Court. I will not postpone the
application.
^ Evidence was -then advanced to show
tnat the union endeavoured to compel
certain, master butchers to close at 5 p.m.
instead of 5.30 p.m., as provided in the
award. The master butchers who re
fused to close at 5 p.m. had, it was al
leged, been blacklisted by the members of
the union, who instructed carcase butchers
not to 6upply them with any meat, and
threatened a strike of slaughtermen if bhey
did so.
The decision was reserved.
