? THE LATE MR. C. J. STEVENS.
From the Rev. John Blacket, Norwood: ,
—'I was sorry to note the death of my
old friend, Charles J. Stevens. I owe
him a deb: of gratitude, and would like to
lay a wreath on his grave. Abou 41 years
ago he came to the village of Unley. There
were a few raw lads in the village, who
needed guidance and assistance. Instinc
tively Jie grasped the situation. The first
thing he did was to establish a Bible class,
and he then proceeded to form a Mutual
Improvement Association, perhaps the
first association of its kind south
of Adelaide. Being a young fel
low himself, with splendid traits of
character, bent upon serving his
fellow men, he knew how to deai with
lads ,io win their affection and confidence.
Charles J. Stevens gave me my first start
in life. Somewhere among my cherished
relics is the report of a maiden speech,
taken down in shorthand by Mr. Stevens,
on the subject, *Was the Ousting of the Col
ton Ministry Justifiable?' I shall ever
think of Mr. Stevens ae a cultured man,
with a beautiful spirit, bent upon being of
service to others.
