Russian Trading
Agency Indicted
Washington, Sat: Federal Grand Jury today in-
dicted Russia's Amtorg Trading Corporation and 6
of its officers for violating the Foreign Agents Re-
gistration Act.
'Amtorg represents Russian commercial interests
in US.
Corporation officers are charged with failing to register
with the Justice Dept. as agents of a foreign Govt.
Attorney-General McGrath said that 5 officers had been
arrested in New York and the other was in Russia.
Indictment alleges that since October 1, 1946, Amtorg
has sent information to Russia and distributed money for
the Soviet Govt.
McGrath said that Amtorg's registration had been re-
peatedly requested by the Justice Dept. Registration law
provides maximum penalties of a 10,000 dollar fine or 5
years' imprisonment or both for individuals who fail to
register. <
Corporation itself is liable
ito a fine of 10,000 dollars.
State Dept. six weeks ago,
.notified the Soviet embassy in
Washington that Amtorg had
ifailed to register but the em
Ibassy did not reply either to
.McGrath's statement or to
the indictment. . /
There was f no suggestion of
any connection between the
indictment and repeated alle-
gations in Congressional es-
pionage investigations that
Amtorg had served as an es-
pionage agency for the Sov-
iet.
Federal Commissioner Ed-!
ward . McDonald held the 5
officers arrested under a
10,000 dollar bail pending thel
