Argentine Ants ~* Premier
Interested
"We are interested in the Argentine ant from
many points of vievr," said Premier Ross MeLarty
yesterday.
"We ore anxious to assist not only the housewife
but the fruit industry.
"Agriculture Dept. is ready to give advice on the best
means of exterminating the pest and will co-operate with
any local authority," said the Premier.
Agriculture A/Under Sec. McKenzie Clark, said the
Dept. was seized with the urgency of controlling the

"We will assist any local
governing body in combating
I this menace," he said,
"Over a number of years we
have given advice on its con-
trol and as far back as 1942
the Agriculture Dept. issued
a leaflet on it control.
"If the methods advocated
in the leaflet are to be ef-
fective the advice therein
must be closely followed.
"We will give any local
authority all assistance we
can consistent with the pow-
ers conferred on this Dept.
"We are arranging to ap-
point an Inspector under the
Plant Diseases Act for exer-
cising control of the pest in
nurseries.
"Regulations have been
gazetted appointing quaran-
tine areas in Albany and in
certain parts of the metro-
politan area for preventing
the spread of ants in plants."
