METROPOLITN
DISTRICT RIFLE
MATCHES
W. GREEN (A.I.F.) WINS
'WHITE HORSE' HORN.
H. C. ROBERTSON (C.T. AND
W's) WINS BOSANQUET CUP.
SEMAPHORE No. 3 TEAM
WINS 'LOTHIAN CLUB'
TROPHY.
The Metropolitan Union matches al-
ways meet with good support, and to-
day's gathering on the Port Ranges au-
gurs well for the success of future fix-
tures. The ranges presented a busy scene,
and keen interest was manifested in the
shooting throughout the afternoon. In
confining the competitions to figure tar-
gets the union show that they are alive
to prevailing conditions and the obliga-
tions of every member of the 'second
line' to qualify for home defence.
Figure targets are the nearest approach
to active service, the head and shoulders
constituting the bullseye representing an
enemy in the act of firing, valuable tro-
phies were offered for to-day's- matches.
The Bosanquet Cup. to be won three
times; presented by Sir Day Hort Bosan-
quet, G.C.B.; the White Horse Horn, pre
sented by Mr. F. Jeffrey Mackie, of Glen
reasdell, Argyllshire, for the individual
match; and the Lothian Club Trophy.
presented by the members of the Lothian
Club for the teams match. The White
Horse Horn for highest score off rifle, to
be won three times, was annexed for the
first time by W. Green, of the A.R.C.'s.
and now a member of the A.I.F. It was
a popular win, and Green is to be con-
gratulated on the performance in notch-
ing 36 off the rifle, and in the shoot-off
with T. Meers (36) and R. H. Hall (36)
in registering the fine shoot of 35. The
winner is well known in rifle circles, and
an expert shot. Chosen in 1913 together
with H. While, jun. (now in camp), to
represent South Australia at the Bisley
matches, they assisted is winning the Mc-
Kinnon Cup for Australia. 36, 35 was
an excellent performance, and a worthy
effort from a man who carries with him
to the front the good wishes of all fel-
low riflemen for a safe return to Aus-
tralia. 31 tied for the Bosanquet Cup,
and the shoot-off of the sighter and 11
shots left 10 men eligible for the Cup. In
the second shoot-off of'1 sighter and 3
shots the issue was narrowed, down to
three. One shot decided the fate of the
three competitors left in and amid great
enthusiasm H. C. Robertson (C.T. and
W.'s) was returned the winner, notching
a bull against his opponents' 3 and 2. Ro-
bertson is only a young shot, but shows
considerable promise of becoming an ex-
pert in the art of making
bullseyes. He displayed the cool-
ness of an old hand, and in
the first shoot-off registered 34, follow-
ing on with 10 for the third and 4 the
maximum for the final shot. Semaphore
No. 3 team, with 16 handicap, scoring 81
off the rifle, annexed the Lothian Club
Trophy. The Adelaides are worthy of
special mention for their fine, teams
work. N0s. 2 and 3 easily topping off
the rifle with 92 each, No. 3 team taking
second place with 92 and 3 handicap. No.
2 team third with 92 and 2 handicap. No.
4 fourth with 90 and 4 handicap, and No.
1 team fifth off scratch with 89. The
limit of 96 was just too high for the
A.R.C.'s to win. However, theirs is the
honour of an exceptionally fine exhibi-
tion of teams work.
The Supervisor of Rifle Clubs (Mr. A.
E. Speers) was an interested spectator,
and expressed his pleasure at the keen-
ness of the competitors and the attendance.
Mr. A. H. Hill (president) and Mr. J. P.
Lormman (secretary Metropolitan Union)
are deserving of praise for the conduct of
the shooting. The president, of whose
work too much cannot be said, has an able
assistant in Secretary Lomman. Entries
for the individual match numbered 340.
and 75 teams took part for the Lothian
Club Trophy. Weather conditions were
fairly good, the wind varying from 5 to 3
o'clock, not causing serious trouble. Al-
though the prize list does not record
many scores from the scratch men and
those shooting off 1 and 2, many scores
of 33 and 34 were registered, and just
failing to reach the limit of 36 were count-
ed out.
Riflemen thoroughly enjoyed to-day's
shoot, and the meeting fixed for May 13
over 200 and 300 yards will be eagerly
awaited, when the Viceroy Cup and other
trophies wili receive consideration.
