VICTORIA PARK LIBRARY
Ceremony Performed by Mr.
Millington
Originally established in 1301, on a
site opposite the Town Hall, en-
larged and removed to another
situation in 1913, the Victoria
Park Public Library carved a notch
in its history for the third time
yesterday, when the Minister for
Education (Mr. Harold Millington)
opened the extensive additions and
improvements which now promise
a wider sphere of usefulness.
Mr. Millington was Introduced to a
large attendance by the member for
the district (Mr. H. S. Raphael), and
in declaring the library open in its
more lustrous ensemble referred to the
fact that Victoria Park was a large
and rapidly growing district which
needed, as all Intellectual communities
needed, facilities for educational ex- ;
pansion for young and old. He con-
gratulated the Victoria Park Library
committee and the citizens upon this
evidence of their social and educa-
tional advancement.
During the serving of afternoon tea
by a ladies' committee, Mr. Raphael
moved a vote of thanks to Mr. Milling-
ton, which was seconded by Mr. Mc
Gilvray, an ardent library worker, and
carried. Votes of thanks to other dis-
tinguished visitors, including Mr. Hub-
ert Parker, M.I^C, were also carried.
Mr. R. Hewson, vice-chairman, pre-
sided, ably assisted by the secretary,
Mr. R. Meckleburg.
The building has been provided with
a modern facade, new reading room,
new flooring and a shop premises add-
ed. Its appearance harmonises with
the better class of modern building
erected in the main street in recent
years. "_
