BOXING AT THE
UNITY
Thompson Gels Decision
Over Morgan
! By virtue of the fact that ha forced
the fight throughout and scored
freely with a straight left in the
early stages George Thompson
(12*) retired (!) heavyweight
champion of Australia gained a
meritorious and deservedly popu-
lar victory over Dick Morgan
(11.10), a Welshman, at the Unity
Theatre on Friday night.
Thompson, since he faced au im-
possible proposition in the late "Boy"
StribUng at His Majesty's Theatre
some years back, has done no serious
work until he met and defeated Tiny
Nicholls at Kalgoorlie a fortnight ago;
Morgan is returning, to England after
a successful season In the East, and
expects (per the announcer) to be
given a title match for the middle-
weight championship of Great Britain.
Dr. Craig officiated as third man.
Both men were accorded a flattering
reception from a capacity house, much
sympathy being apparent for the local
representative.
There was nothing of a sensational
nature in the early rounds, Morgan
objecting hi the first to Thompson's
claiming of his left. -Thompson imme-
diately took the fight to the Welsh-
man and

with a straight left. Thompson showed
plenty of fight in the second term.;
at the end of which Morgan «merged
with a cut over his right eye; Thomp-
son was mistiming, but ultimately got
his weight behind a left in the third,
but was forced to retreat when Morgan
took the offensive and let loose a bat-!
tery of dose range punches. Morgan
raked Thompson with a protruding left
into which the Western Australian
walked unconcernedly in his anxiety
to get In close.
Thompson narrowly missed a de

came into play in the fifth round
but for reasons best known to him-
self religiously refrained from
using his right.
Morgan thrice Jabbed bim with a
left, and again his right cross went
amiss. Thompson underwent an anxi-
ous period on the ropes, and did not
appear to relish Morgan's concentra-
tion on bis surplus avoirdupois. The
sixth session was characterised by
Thompson's ability to take punishment
when he was caught unawares, but
safely weathered a terrific right which
landed with a sickening thud on his
cheek; another right to the body fol-
lowed and Thompson was hard pressed
to check the .onslaughts of his now
anxious opponent- Morgan was warned
for using the prohibited

terminate proceedings. . Thompson
again forced the fight in the tenth and
succeeding round, a clip to the jaw
and a heavy right uppercut to the body
being good scoring blows for Hor-
gan. The Welshman sent out a teeter
with his left and followed with two
well timed right books. Thompson
took the full force of the blows, but
nevertheless came back full of fight.
He slipped beneath two lefts and
forced Morgan to retreat. He was be-
ginning to show signs of fatigue, but
gamely stood up to a two-fisted attack
by the visitor.
Spirited fighting marked the 13th
and 14th rounds, Morgan's cheek
being opened up. The Welshman,
intent on a knock-out, commenced
th* last round viciously, but found
Thompson ever ready for fight.
Morgan rained blows on the West-
ern Australian, but the gong saw
him pluckily taking up the offen-
sive, and cheers greeted th*
referee's decision-a correct one
against the Welshman.
The preliminary bouts provided
plenty of fireworks, and the crowd was
not slow In showing lbs appreciation.
In the first Freddy Walsh A»3) «ot a
points decision over Les O'Donnell
(9.8); Jimmy Goff (10.7) drew witt
Kid Riley (10.2); and Les Wallace
(8.12) and George Bradman (Sit)
could not be separated.
George Thompson and Tiny Nicholls
win meet next Friday.
