MENDELSSOHN'S "ELIJAH"
On Ten-Inch Standard Labels
"Elijah" (Mendelssohn), sung by
Isobel Baillie (soprano), Clara Serena
(contralto). Parry Jones (tenor), Har-
old Williams (bass), and the B.B.C.
National Chorus and Orchestra under
Stanford Robinson. Columbia DO
196-DO 210 (in art album with book of
words).
. Here is Mendelssohn's great ora-
torio-second only in popularity to
Handel's "Messiah" available on the
lowest priced Columbia discs. This is
great value indeed - especially when we
consider the marvellously high stan-
dard of singing, playing, and recording
that has been achieved.
Space does not permit of detailed
appreciations of each individual num-
ber and singer, but here, for the guid-
ance of those who have not their Col-
umbia supplements by them, are the
serial numbers of the records contain-
ing the more popular airs and choruses.
"If With All Your Hearts" (tenor)
Columbia DO 197. The Baal Choruses
-DO 20L "Thanks be to God"
(chorus )-DO 204. "Hear Ye! Israel"
(soprano) -DO 205. "Be Not Afraid"
and "It is Enough" (tenor and bass)
DO 206 and 207. "O Rest in the Lord"
(contralto) -DO 208. "Then Shall the
Righteous Shine" (tenor), and the final
chorus, "And Then Shall Your Light"
- Columbia DO 210.
A wonderful recording achievement.
