Mountain Beauty, now'jraôàff ¿¿ lease
by Johnny Duggan, has'evidently, bene
fltted by a sojourn at Fremantle. The
daughter of Green. Mountain has often
been confidently backed, only, to fail,
and more than once her failure was
due to. moods. Testerday she was a
good deal more handy "in running" to
what she had been In most races th
the past, and shè finished well under
pressure to win handily from Aster-,
mere, and In a manner that suggests
she will be heard of again.

At York on Weanésday'Valfórt háaf
two runs over five and six furlongs
only to be beaten by Green Baron and
Sally Tine respectively, to 'thè cir-
cumstances it was not surprising that
he was neglected in the betting -on the
second division of the Canning Purse
yesterday at Goodwood. He'was thé
first to tackle the pace-making Rom-
any Sage and, gaining an advantage
tn the straight^ he struggled home by
half a neck from the unlucky Bom-
billa, with Top Class half a head Off
third, and Romany Sage the barest of
margins out of a minor place. Yal-
tarra starting price was returned at
20's, but he returned £17 on the en-'
closure 10s. tote, while on thé Ea ladies'
straight-out tote he paid £19. '
The Fremantle . trainer, D. Oates,
turned out two winners at yester-
day's Canning Park meeting on the
Goodwood course - Athgarvan and'
Barb Class. In running the six fur-
longs df the Plate in 1.13 4-6. Ath
garvan put up - a good gallop, but
perhaps he was lucky in that More
Surprise C runner up) was snagged
back after jumping out Brat and had
to rush on at the finish, while had
Wedgelike (whom More Surprise
just beat) stayed on the course-he
went right out -wide when holding an
advantage into the straight-the re-
sult would"have been different. On.
this run Wedgelike ls ¡not likely to'
! be. a SS to 1 shot In his next start.
Oates* other winner. Rare Class, won
comfortably, .and In view of the con-
sistency lately shown it was not out
I of turn.
Spearage, which shares favoritism
for the Perth Cup with Maple, ran In
tHe eix-furlong Canning Plate yester-
day, but, aa was to be expected, per-
haps, of a horse that is essentially a
middle distance performer and *
stayer, he was not In the betting and
never figured prominently. Spearage
ls down to ran in the mile and three
furlong Tork Handicap at next Satur-
days WÁT.C. meeting, and his show-
ing oVer the more compatible distance
(for him) will probably be vastiy dif-
ferent The York Handicap- should
throw e. good deal *f light on the Cup.
and perhaps next to Spearage the per-
formance that will be .watched with
the greatest Interest will be that of
Mercato. which .finished fourth. Just in
front of Spearage over ten furlongs at
the last'meeting' on the course a fort-
night ago.

Wooyeo, winner of the- Hurdles at
yesterday's Canning Park meeting on
the Goodwood coarse, races In tho
name of Capt Seacombe, A.D.C. to
the State Governor (Sir William Cam-
pion), A couple of seasons back Woo-
yeo showed good form over the small
sticks in Sydney, and when he was
weighted for a jumping event in this
State a couple of months ago "The
Sunday Times" pointea out the risk
taken by the handicappers, and opined
that Wooyeo would .Win if he could
be got right Our prophecy has been
ful Ailed. Wooyeo had nothing much
to beat yesterday. .Maalech, at his
best though, is a fair sort, but be bad
not had a race for some time and
looked above himself. Maalech had
every chance, for Wooyeo almost top-
pled over at the last jump, where he
slightly led Maaiech, who actually
headed Wooyeo when that gelding
made the mistake at the hurdle, but
he could not hold him.

It can hardly be claimed that Bobby
Morley was seen,at his best on Won-
nerup Laddie in 'the leading, handicap
at yesterday's Canning Pack meeting
on the Goodwood coarse. The old
Ayrvilie gelding was the only one seri-
ously considered against - Borrisokanc.
He settled down handy to Borrisokanc
as that gelding just led Rain Away. A
sudden move forward was made- from
the half-mile post and soon wi com-
mand Wonnerup Laddie had .St Vin-
cent trailing hin* Usually Wonnerup
Laddie excels with a great finishing
run, but yesterday he merely plug
ged on, and it looked very much as if
St Vincent was materially assisted In
getting up to snatch the stake on the
post by too much use having been
made with Wonnerup Laddie, who had
spent himself. StlU, the odds. were
against St Tincent In "the final run
Wonnerup Laddie bore over -towards
him as he was endeavoring to get' up
on the outside, ;. and.. the; apprentice
O'Mara, who rode St. Vincent display-
ed tenacity in battling on against ad-
verse odds that should earn him
»re»ter opportunities in the saddle.
