Epidemie More Pronounced .
The past 'week has witnessed an
increasing number of cae es -in the»
Perth *«nd Fremantle districts, par-
ticularly at the Port, -while th* -deaths
due to the disease have corresponding-
ly been more - numeious.
Yesterday morning the secretary'
(Mr. F. J. Huelin) of the Public Health
Department stated that the new cases
for the' week ended -Friday numbered
266; and the deaths 23. These figures
relate only to the. Perth and Freman-
tle areas. In addition there were two
deaths on thc goldfields; - and two in
country- localities. Th<# total cases in
the metropolitan area reported since
the outbreak number 948 and thc
deaths 03.
The Public Health: Department is '
faced with -an acute shortage of skilled
nurses and a public appeal has been
made, for volonteeft to bc engaged by
the department'for nursing in private
residences. . Owing to the insufficiency
of trained nurses" the medical officer
ih charge of the Blackboy Hospital in-
timated that no further cases could
bc admitted, under the existing cir-
cumstances. ?'
The spread of the malady in Fre-
mantle caused an agitation for a local
isolation depot. The Health author-
ities were unable to arrange for a
satisfactory site but it was decided
tb allocate a section of the Frcmontle
j?ublie Hospital for patients who de-
velop Xhe disease'in a serious form.
The Commissioner of Public Health
(Dr. Everitt Atkinson) *as, in view
of recent experiences, ^again tendered
.advice to the public tb, be cautious,
lo avoid crowds as far as possible, and
directing persons on the first signs of
illness to'take to bed.

The physiciens at Fremantle have
not escaped being attacked by the
disease, and two doctors have been
laid up.
