CAULFIELD CUP CHANCES.
31KLBOUKJNE. Sundar.
The Kigfit Patrol, unfortunately for bis
owner. His Excellency the Governor (Earl
of Stradbrofce). and, bis many Canlfield
Cud admirers, has injured himself, and it
is possible he will not be able to start
in the Canlfield Cap. On behalf of Earl
Etradbr-oUe, -irho is -desirous that the
condition of The Night Patral should be
coma- generally known, a statement- was
bailed. to-day that the hone had injured
one of. his hocks. The Night Patrol, who
did not work at Flemington on Saturday,
* fa being attended by Mr. S. O. Woods,
V.S.. on whose advice His Excellency will
let in regard to running the horse in any
of his engagements.
With- Easingwold, All Smihine,
.Backwood, ? DroDgo,- -and' Valorem
?rithdrawn from . the. . . TuHamarme
Handicap at . Jloonec Valley' on
Barurday, the .race was- robbed of most
?' ef its interest and importance in so far
|s toe Canlfield Cup was concerned. The
inly Cup horses of note to compete were
Baa Antonio- Amalfi, and' Spearage. In
winning rainer'aecisjveiy, tne imported
Amalfi rehabilitated his reputation, which
he lost by -his. disappointing efforts at
CanlfifH and Sandowu, for ne came in
?- for good support. . Being' an English horse,
Ajpalfi probably relished the soft
going;, ^ which did not suit San
Antonio. Amalfi was always going com
fortably dose to the leader,' and, although
ban Antonio got on terms with him at
the home turn, Amalfi had something in
resezre, and he easily beat San Antonio
pome. Amalfi will gain . friends for the
p»nlfi»M Cop by his success. But m that
race San Antonio is likely to reverse the
fositions if the going is -firm.
San Antonio should, not lose any friends
by his defeat, bnt Spearage will. have to
improve considerably to wm the Canlfield
Enp. He ran much below expectations.
Be carried hie Cup weight of 7 st. 9 ft,
bnt failed to finish on after being close to
} frmalfi with three furlongs to go. San
Antonio, -who meets him 15 to. better,
ihonld hold nhn safe in the Canlfield Cup
rn his recent efforts. Spearage was rather
Overrated on His Welter^succcss in the
autumn.
Metellus and Brimming were Cup candi
lates to forfeit .their engagements in the
Ueni Maiden Plyate at the Valley oh
I faiurday. In their absence, backers de
pared for the Cup and Derby colt King
Victor, wno was well suppirted in the
Memsie Stakes at Canlfield. King Victor
Hade a poor- showings and was never dan
tennn.
Mr. - S. Green's imported horse Our
prince has been withdrawn' from th
