Putting Australia
On Movie
Map
Two new developments
are reported this week
which may help' in putting
Aiistrafia on the movie
map. One is the New York
statement of Ernest Turn
bull, Hoyts managing di
rector, that 'if Australia
had a ' modern studio it
would attract producers
from all parts of the
world.'
Mr. * Turnbull has just made a
joint production deal in Australia
with British film magnate J.
Arthur Rank. He believes that
one big modern studio organisa
tion — which should be provided by
the Australian Government, he
says — could be made selfsupport
ing by charging rent, for its use
to home and outside producers.
STARS AVAILABLE
Under the joint production deal,
producers, technicians, and plavers
under contract to Mr. Rank would
be available for Australian movie
making.
Stars now under contract in
clude Vivien Leigh (out of pic
tures for several months to come
because of illness), Laurence
Olivia, Stewart Grainger, and
Claude Rains.
In addition. Australian acting
and technical talent would be em
ployed. Mr. Turnbull made the
useful point that as these Austra
lian-made films would have to in
Lerest a world market, all would
not necessarily be about Australia.
A big selling point in interesting
overseas producers would be the I
equable climate of this country.
