WILLIAM-STREET BRIDGE.
IN COURSE OF DESTRUCTION.
Despite the protests of the citizens
and their representatives, municipal
and Parliamentary, George and Ra-
son have seen fit to pull down the
William-street bridge. Yesterday after-
noon, about 1 o'clock a gang of 60
men swooped down without any warn-
ing on the offending (?) structure;
blocked up the entrances with timber,
and began tearing down the timber-
ing. They worked at it with such
vigor that by nightfall only the piers
remained standing. A fresh gang
came on during thc night, and it is
expected that the bridge will have dis-
appeared by 10 o'clock this morning.
Great dissatisfaction was expressed by
the crowd of people accustomed to use
the bridge with the arbitrary action
of the Government, and it was ex-
pected last night that a hostile dem-
onstration would be made, but noth-
ing out of the way occurred. The
stealthy way in which the action was
taken; without any previous notice,
was a revelation to the public of the
contemptible methods of George and
Rason. In so taking the people by
surprise they evidently reckoned on
averting a hostile demonstration. It
remains to be seen what measures the
city will adopt to protest against
this arbitrary and wanton destruction
of a public convenience.
