THE MORALS OF MOONTA

'A' Gross LibeL'
MOONTA, February 21.— Last week one
of the local papers ' published a leading
article on 'The Morals of Moonta', which
has considerably stirred up public feeling.
At thirweek's meeting of the town council
the article, which was reprinted in one of
the Adelaide dailies, was severely criticised.
The Mayor (Mr. Stephen Hill) in his re.
port- stated that while. he did mot wish to
enter into any, newspaper controversy, he
considered the article a. gross exaggeration
of facts, and he felt sure the council would
strongly refute the extravagant assertions.
The morals of Moonts. were good, said -the
Mayor, the laws, were generally well ob
served, and there was absolute confidence
in the -town's staff and local police. Moonta
with its population would compare favour
ably with any other town in Australia in
morals and observance of the law. , While
calling attention to the matter, however,
be felt it would be a waste of time to dis
cuss it unnecessarily, as they 'would ?pro-
bably find themselves overwhelmed by the
idle and irresponsible scandalmongers, who
with their mediums, found delight and per
haps profit in such misrepresentations.
Several Councillors spoke warmly on the
matter, and after much discussion the fol
Iowing motion was carried:— 'Seeing that
the leading article published in the Y.P.
Advertiser on February 13 ia a gross libel
on the womanhood of this town, reflecting
as it did on the chastity and purity of their
lives, the- editor of the newspaper in ques
tion, be asked to furnish the council' with
the name of the minister, responsible for
the statement contained therein.' ? '
