.TROUBLE AT WAJLLAR00
MINES.
r
UNDERGROUND MEN REFUSE
WORK.
MINERS ADMONISHED BY A2T
EX-MEMBER.
KADENA, November 1.
Trouble arose at the Wallaroo Mines this
morning. Underground men refused to go
to work. On Monday notice was posted by
the company altering the hours of work,
and doing away with cnb time ana
'smoke-ho,' to take effect from this morn
ing, and this is the cause of the trouble.
Another notice without authority was
posted last night calling the men together.
When they met they had no rfne to take
the lead, and consequently Mr. A. E.
Winter was sent for. He addres
sed the men, and after admonishing
them for their hasty action in refusing duty
at a moment's notice advised them to go
to work. He said if they had a grievance
they should have met the general manager
before taking the action they had. Their
refus.il of duty was the worst when, it was
remembered they were fighting for eompul
t-ory arbitration to settle all industrial dis
vmtes
It was decided that the afternoon shift
men go underground, and that a meeting
be held at the town hall, Kadina, on Satur
day night at the conclusion of the Parlia
mentary polling to consider the position,
and, if necessary, elect delegates to meec
the company's representative to see. what
terms can be arranged.
The notice with reference to alteration of
time sets out that the surface hands will
start at 7.30 in lieu of 7 o'clock, and that
crib time and smoke-ho will be disconti
nued; that the eight hours bhifts will com
mence at 7.30. 3.30. and 11.30; and the six
ibours shifts at 7.30 a.m., 1.30 p.m., 7.30
p.m., and 1.30 a,in., whicli is half an hour
later -than has previously obtained. At
present the surface hands have, with the
exception of the boys at the picking
tables, not lwen affected, but as satisfao;
tory terms cannot be arranged it is pre
Mimcd a general strike will occur. The al
teration has been found necessary in con
sequence of the alteration in the train ser
vice, and has been made to accommodate
the miners travelling to and from Moonta.
MOONTA, November 1.
In connection with the misunderstanding
by some of the employes* regarding the
change in hours of working at the Wal
laroo Mines, the following notice has been
issued:— 'As the notice of October 25 re
specting the change which has been made
in the hours of working appears to hare
been misunderstood by some of the em
ployes, this notice is issued in order to
make the position clear. In view of the
ne«' train arrangement, beginning Novem
ber 1, it has been derided to make the
working hours its follow: — Surface hands
are to begin at 7.30 a.m. and finish at
5 p.m., except on Saturdays when work
will cease at 1 p.m. as usual; miners' ordi
nary underground shifts will begin as fol
low: — Morning, 7.30 a.m.; afternoon, 3.30
p.m.; and night, 11.30 p.m. Owing to the
reduction of the weekly hours in reference
to the surface hands, to the extent of half
-in hour per day. crib-time and smoke hour
in the surface department will be discon
tinued. This, however, will give surface
employes an advantage of 40 minutes less
work per week. All dayshift underground
employes will also secure a reduction of j
V) minutes per week; in fact, no addition i
will be made in the number of working
hours of any employe by the change that '
has been introduced; and it is hoj-ed with ]
this further notice the matter will be so j
clearly understood that any misapprehen- J
sion which may have existed will now be j
removed. j
''Wallaroo, November 1. II. Lipson Han- j
— Statement by tbe Secretary. —
Mr. D. Davidson, secretary of the Wal
lsroo and ^ibonta Mines Company, when
seen by a reporter of The Register, said
the alteration in the times was made
wholly to suit the men. and was to their
rulraijtapo. He had received no official
information, but the trouble was probably
not serious.
