HEAVY FINES.

At the Water Police Court to-day diaries
Spencer, Sam. Etbcrinjton, and Herbert
Etherington, clerks, were charged with bav
in* assisted in conducting business in a
room nsed by Jolm iwnu for the purpose
of betting. A dismissal of the informa
tion was asked on the ground that the
High' Court bad decided that an arrest
could not be made in a case involving sum
mary conviction, unless the arresting olfi
cer saw the offence committed. Mr. piiyten.
S.M., overruled the objection. He fined
Dunn, who had been convicted at the Cen
tral Police Court on a charge of using the
room, £80 or six months' imprisonment;
Spencer, £25 or throe months; Herbert
Etberington, £40 or four months; nnd
Samuel Kthcringlon, £S0 or six months.
Convictions were obtained ngainsl
three persons in the Central
Summons Court for having , used
rooms for betting purposes. Mark
Foster was fined £25 or two months' im
prisonment; William Taylor (with three
prcvioufl convictions against him), £75 or
Four months; and William Johnson (onc
previous conviction), £90 or three months.
