A SENSATIONAL BOLT.
MELBOURNE. March 3.
Just atter 0 o clock tins evening a sen
sational bolt occurred in Bourke street, and
resulted in serious injury to Mrs. Josephine
Thomson, aged 34 vears, of Smith street,
Uifton Hill, and JUss Emilia Straede,
aged 17 years, -of Shiclda street, Fleming
ton. Mr. Thomson, who is rnunager of the
Fitzroy Gasworks, ivas 'di-iving with his
wife in a buggy in Bourke street, and wlreh
just below llussell street the horse took
fright, and broke into a siJ-lop. Both the
occupants sat still, Mr. Thomson using all
Ids strength to pull the horse up. At the
corner of Swanston street the horse pas
sed the first crossiiM? safely— it narrowly
escaped collision with, two cabs, between
which Mr. Thomson successfully steered it
—but at the second crossing, whore a good
many people were goiiur over the street,
an accident occurred. Miss Straede and ai
companion were in the way of the vehicle,
and though her companion saved herself
by spring quickly fonvard, Miss Straede
hesitated, and was struck do»n by the
horse. At the, moment when the young
lady was knocked over Mrs. Thomson was
thrown out of the buggy, either by the
shock or by starting up in her seat when
she saw an accident was inevitable. S!:o
fell forward from the buggy, and one of
the whesls passed over. -her. head. With
thia jolt Mr. Thomson was thrown out.

vnth only a shaking. Tbe two injnied
ladies were taken to the Melbourne Hos
pital, whore both wero admitted. Mrs.
Thomson is suffering from injuries to her
head and general bruising, and Miss
Straede had her clavicle frattured, besides
sustaining possible internal injuries.
