. MURDER IN A THEATRE.
During a. performance of 'Peer Gynt'
at the Burgertheatre, Vienna. :i woman

whom she was sitting m a- box. . .
The woman alleged to have fired tie
shots, Mencia Karniciu (25), a Rouma
nian, is said to have confessed - that she
had spent a year in Vienna awaiting an
opportunity to murder Panizza because of
his part in. the murder of .the .Macedonians
Sarafoff and Garwanoff in Sofia 16 years
ago. All the other five men who belonged
to the committee which ordered Sarafoff's
death, have been murdered..
Knowing that Panizza was always ex
pecting assassination, and therefore was
armed and accompanied by a guard, she
contrived the plot to shoot him while Mt
ting behind him at the theatre during the
shipwreck scene in. -the fifth act, '-? ?
The -first two shots killed Panizza' and
wounded his wife, and the guard, Boga
tinoff.- was wounded -while wrestling with
Karniciu for the revolver.' ' ? ?
Ihe' curtain was lowered and for a
time there was panic, but the performance
was concluded after 20 minutes' parue.
. Karniciu -says that Panizza was a 'spy
and a false scoundrel.'
? The -conclusion of her vendetta was only
possible by maintaining the confidence of
PanizzaTs entire entourage. -
She bought the seats for the party as ''a
small -return for kindnesses received.''
. A large sum of money was in the' pos-
session of Panizza, and it is believed that
the funds were supplied by Russian Bol
